New Plymouth - Green Turtle Cay

Arrluk, on an overcast day, anchored off of New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay
Another short day of cruising has brought us as far south as we can venture under current sea and weather conditions.   Much will depend upon the weather, as it will determine when we can safely attempt crossing the Whale Cay Cut into the Southern Abacos.

This afternoon found us anchored off of New :Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas.  This is a small fishing and boating community with a long history.  Perhaps tomorrow we will get the opportunity to dingy into town and explore the museum and get a bit of exercise.  We did make a quick dash over to pick up some groceries, but didn't stay long out of nervousness our anchor holding might not be as strong as it appears.

No matter how many times we "set the hook," lay out lots of rode and closely watch our setting, we still get a bit nervous about dragging the anchor.  I suspect that actually is a good concern to have for a cruiser, but is still makes for a fitful night's sleep.

Before leaving Spanish Cay this morning, we did a bit of exploring:

Alex found his firs live Conch.  Now that he's seen one live
I suspect we'll never get him to eat one.

The very rugged and rocky eastern shore of Spanish Cay.
Note in the distance the huge breakers of the Atlantic as they
cross the outer reaches of the Little Bahama Bank.

Raylynn beach-combing at low tide.  We had the whole place to ourselves
Matthew continued his attempts to catch fish and proudly displayed his first catch (of several):
Matt's first Bahamian catch.
He did catch several larger fish, but nothing worth cleaning and eating.  We could all see those swimming beneath the boat and docks, but they managed to elude the enthusiastic angler.

A rarity, we find ourselves with very good internet connectivity this evening and will be using that to catch up on business and correspondence.  Hopefully, our next entry will describe an uneventful crossing of Whale Cay Cut and our continued progress southward. Until then, happy cruising!

  1. Bookmarked your blog so we'll follow you now. Dix and I are headed to BVI next month - you going that far south? All the best - miss you in Cordova. Spring snows now, but they melt fast and over 12 hours of daylight! Cheers and smooth cruising. Cathy and Dixon
